Workers Strike in the SkyCity Auckland Casino
SFWU Nga Ringa Tota members and casino workers at SkyCIty Auckland have taken up a strike since last Friday, August 11th.
The casino workers are complaining about the average pay rate of twelve dollars per hour. The rate is the lowest pay rate in Auckland.
With low pay rates the workers are under staffed and faced with unsociable shifts, troublesome customers, as well as flea infestation in common work areas.
According to the striking workers, SkyCity gambling revenues have reached fifty six million dollars in the first six months of this year and enjoy a profit growth of over two hundred percent since 1996 but the staff and host community are not benefiting.
SFWU Nga Ringa Tota members said that only the chief executive officer of SkyCity Evan Davies is making profits from the SkyCity casino.
The new salary package of CEO Evans is over four million dollars annually which includes shares and stocks.
Meanwhile, SkyCity GM Heather Shotter, the partner of Evans and Evans himself have combined earnings of more than six million dollars.
SkyCity stockholders have given Evans a twenty five percent wage increase or fifty thousand dollars plus a more than one million dollar bonus after he argued that he should get his pay similar to his Australian CEO counterparts.
